About the role

We are looking for a Chief Legal Officer (CLO) to lead our legal, compliance, and regulatory affairs functions. This role is critical in ensuring our company operates within the evolving financial and regulatory landscape. The CLO will be accountable for maintaining our e-money license, supporting the companys entry into new markets and business models, and ensuring regulatory compliance across all jurisdictions. Additionally, this role will involve the management of external legal partners and law firms, providing strategic legal direction to senior leadership, and engaging with regulators such as DNB and AFM.

Given the increasing significance of MiCAR (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) for our company, the CLO will play a key role in ensuring compliance with MiCAR requirements and advising on regulatory developments in the crypto and digital assets space.

Key Responsibilities

• Accountable for maintaining our license-to-operate through ensuring continuous compliance with our EMI license and regulatory obligations, including timely reporting.
• Develop and implement regulatory strategies to support the companys expansion into new markets and business models.
• Lead and oversee the legal, compliance, and regulatory affairs functions.
• Engage directly with DNB and AFM, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and strategic business goals.
• Provide legal and regulatory oversight related to MiCAR, ensuring the company meets all obligations related to crypto-assets and digital finance.
• Manage relationships with external legal partners and law firms to ensure top-tier legal support and risk management.
• Provide strategic legal guidance to the C-suite and senior leadership on regulatory risks, compliance, and opportunities.
• Draft and oversee critical legal documentation, including Terms of Use, Privacy Policies, and regulatory submissions.
• Monitor and analyze legal developments, regulatory interpretations, and potential legislative changes that could impact the company.
• Advocate for the companys regulatory position by engaging with policymakers, industry groups, and financial regulators.
• Translate complex regulatory frameworks into actionable business strategies to drive innovation and compliance.

Requirements

• Law degree from a recognized institution, with expertise in regulatory affairs.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in financial services, regulatory affairs, or legal advisory roles.
• Experience in managing compliance, regulatory affairs, and legal functions at a senior level.
• Proven track record in maintaining e-money or similar financial licenses.
• Experience in engaging with the Dutch regulators DNB and AFM is highly desirable
• Strong strategic and business-oriented mindset, with the ability to align regulatory compliance with commercial objectives.
• Deep understanding of cryptocurrency, fintech, and financial regulations, with a willingness to attend workshops and influence industry discussions.
• Extensive experience with financial regulations, with a strong ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements.
• Exceptional legal writing, documentation, and communication skills.
• Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
• Strong leadership skills with experience in managing legal teams and external legal partners.
• Ability to assess business models and develop regulatory strategies accordingly.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to regulatory challenges.
